In short: your data lives on your phone. Nothing is sold, used for advertising or tracked. Three things leave the phone, and only if you use them: the backup, planning, and connecting intervals.icu.
On your phone
WattEats keeps its own database on your phone: your profile (weight, height, age, sex), your goals, what it reads from Apple Health, your rides and planned sessions from intervals.icu, your plans, and what it works out from them. Your intervals.icu connection and your account token are kept in the phone’s keychain. Deleting the app deletes the database.
Apple Health
The app reads food energy and macronutrients, body weight and steps. It writes nothing to Health. Health data leaves your phone only inside your backup, if you have an account, and your weight, when you ask the planner for a plan (see Planning). It is never used for advertising and never sold.
Account and backup (optional)
The app works without an account. If you sign in with Apple, our server keeps your Apple user id, the name Apple shares if you let it, a fingerprint (hash) of your account token, and one compressed copy of the app’s database: your backup, replaced each time the phone backs up, so a new phone can start where the old one left off. The server runs on Cloudflare.
Planning (optional, needs an account)
When you ask for a plan, the request goes through our server to Anthropic, whose Claude model writes it. The request holds your weight, goals and FTP, your recent rides and how they felt, and the plan so far. Our server keeps the request and the answer for 30 days, then deletes them, keeping only the size of the call and its cost, which the monthly allowance needs. Anthropic handles the request under its commercial terms, which don’t let it train its models on it.
intervals.icu (optional)
The phone talks to intervals.icu directly: it reads your rides, planned sessions and FTP, and puts the sessions it plans on your intervals.icu calendar. Your intervals.icu connection stays on your phone. When you connect by signing in to intervals.icu, our server swaps intervals.icu’s one-time code for the connection and hands it straight back to the phone; it keeps neither, nor anything about you. Disconnecting in Settings ends the connection.
Who else sees it
- Cloudflare runs our server and stores accounts and backups.
- Anthropic receives planning requests.
- intervals.icu, which you connect yourself.
No one else. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Cloudflare keeps technical logs of requests to our server (time, network address, errors) for a few days, to find faults, and counts requests per address to stop abuse.
Deleting your data
Settings → Account & Backup → Delete my account removes your account, your backup and your planning history from our server at once. Cloudflare’s own recovery copies expire within 30 days. Without an account, nothing of yours is on our server.
Children
The app isn’t meant for children under 13.
